This year, Northview’s Track and Field team made cuts in preparation of finalizing the final team. Having cuts made the athletes work even harder and push themselves farther. This helped weed out those who were just there to be in a sport from the ones who were actually there to be on the team to compete and better themselves, as well as the team. Although some experienced disappointment not finding their names on the list that was posted on the library doors, others were filled with excitement and accomplishment, feeling that their hard work paid off. The 2009 Track team is filled with determination and dedication, factors that help compose a strong team.
Previously the Track and Field team took everyone that joined and signed up, leaving the team to be extensively large with over 120 athletes. With a large team that meant spending bigger costs and more time taken out of time that could be used more efficiently. Now the team has cut back to approximately 80 hard working students.
Practice with fewer teammates gives athletes more time to practice and more one-on-one time to improve themselves. There is also less time to mess around and waste the coach’s and other teammates time. Karla Callo, 12th, said, “Although some people aren’t here from last year, it seems like we get more out of practice and it’s more effective. I find myself getting better and improving each time we practice.” |
